We've all heard the saying, "time is money." So like money, it's important to budget our time. Especially when you're a writer. It's so easy to find something more interesting or more fun to accomplish on our "To Do" list. But it will only cost you more in time and stress in the long run.
- Learn to prioritize: Recognize which projects are time-sensitive and which will pay out. Don't procrastinate. Do those first - even though they may seem harder and more time consuming. When you prioritize your day, you'll accomplish more with less stress.
- Learn to focus: There's always something else to do. Train yourself to set aside a block of time early in the day. Try to work with no interruptions. You'll start the day having accomplished something that was important and will most likely keep you focused throughout the day.
- Don't waste time: You'd be surprised how much time gets away when you break for phone calls or jump up to get a snack. When you realize how many hours per week you've wasted, you'll be more likely to stick to your timeline.
- Make Lists: You'll tend to put the most important things on the top - and that's good. But think about all the time you waste waiting for appointments and use that time to accomplish the smaller less important things on your list. Things that don't require as much concentration, but nevertheless must get done.
All this seems like common sense - and it is. But all of us are easily distracted and we should all learn to control our time - to control our stress.
