You are never done writing. Once you've put all your thoughts on paper, it's time to go back and edit. Your writing can always be improved. Here's a few tips:
- First edit all spelling and grammar. Now you can look at your work objectively.
- Read your work out loud. You're more likely to catch errors and off-sounding phrases.
- Edit for rhythm. Avoid monotonous sounding sentences.
- Break down long, drawn out sentences into shorter ones.
- Leave out all unnecessary words. "That" is one of those overused words.
- Rearrange your thoughts so they flow naturally.
- Try to tighten your copy into short engaging sentences.
- Let a friend read the piece for you. They'll be more objective than you.
Writing is a challenge and there's always more to learn to make your writing engaging and believable. Be sure you:
-
Keep your target audience in mind at all times.
-
Write directly to them as if you were talking to them one on one.
-
Don't use large words to impress. Keep it conversational.
-
Keep all copy relevant to your topic. (Especially important with Internet copy.)
-
Don't stray off to thoughts that have nothing to do with your subject matter.
