How to Improve Your Writing

No matter how long you've been writing, you can always get better.  The more you write, the easier it gets and you'll pick up skills along the way that will make your writing more interesting and more compelling.  Here are some writing tips to keep your readers motivated.

  • Write Like You Talk.  Know who you're addressing and communicate with that audience as if you're in a one-on-one conversation.  The point is to make a connection with your reader as you disseminate information and hopefully convince them to take some sort of action.  Keep your writing reader friendly.
  • Get to the point.  Readers are intimated by long, drawn out copy.  Keep it concise and relevant to the topic at hand.  When you edit your writing, get rid of words or sentences that don't illustrate and/or relate to your topic.
  • Watch your formatting.  Besides being intimidating, long blocks of copy can be hard on the eyes. Leave adequate while space by using smaller paragraphs and bullet points when appropriate for easy skimming.  This is especially important with Internet writing.
  • Stay on Topic.  Don't stray off into sidelines that don't relate to the main topic.   Be concise.  Once you get your thoughts down, re-read them to make sure you've kept it simple and the the point.  If a word or phase does not add meaning to you content, get rid of it.

You can never stop improving your writing, no matter how good you are.  Always look for new ways to improve and excel.
